Binaries
We hear about this a lot today in terms of gender. Biological sex is binary and non-changeable (DNA is DNA no matter what a person looks like). Gender expression is not, but that is where it gets complicated. I have written elsewhere that we are more entrapped by stereotypical thinking about gender than ever. If a little boy wants to play Barbies with his sister simply because he has no other playmate, that has nothing to do with his "gender expression." He just wants a playmate, for Pete's sake, like I did when I played with Erector Sets. A female who like the outdoors and a man who arranges flowers are not to be seen as "abnormal." Why would we in a world of such beauty and diversity?
(I recognize there are congenital and other conditions that complicate the sex/gender distinction
We can also argue binaries in terms of theology. I spent most of my life with the "saved-unsaved" dichotomy. The problem was that "saved" meant "your experience of conversion and sanctification and worship is just like mine." Hardly indicative of the complicated nature of these subjects. Yes, submission to the Lord Jesus Christ is the dividing line of humanity, but most Christians don't "do it" the way I do.
Beyond these complex discussions, binaries are problematic in everyday life. It's either-or thinking, "but" rather than "and" thinking. It is so much better in a discussion to say "and" to add to another person's thought than to say "but" and essentially negate that person's thoughts. It makes more sense to create a coherent political world view of one's one rather than slavishly call oneself a member of one party or another, when there are going to be planks in the party platforms you can't agree with.
Total agreement with anyone is probably an unwise position to take (other than God the Father). And it's highly possible this post does not reflect God the Father's total position.
